What 70 liters carries on a long trip

A 70L pack is built for multi-day trips where you carry shelter, sleep system, food, and clothing for several nights. The capacity also suits cold-weather gear, group cooking equipment, or hauling supplies for others. If your trips run longer than a weekend or you carry bulky items, this size keeps everything inside rather than strapped on.

How these packs are built

Many 70L packs use a top-loading design with a lid that doubles as a pocket. Some include a rain cover stored in a base compartment. Materials range from lightweight nylon to heavier waterproof fabrics, and some models use a frameless design that relies on careful packing for structure. Colors include black, blue, green, gray, and orange.

Details that matter at this size

Load weight climbs quickly when you fill 70 liters, so hip belt padding and shoulder strap width matter more than on smaller packs. Look for compression straps to stabilize the load and a lid that sits flat when the pack is full. Some packs add a separate sleeping bag compartment or side access to reach items without unpacking everything. The 70L+5L design extends capacity when needed, often by unzipping an expandable section.

70L pack questions

Is 70L too large for a weekend trip?

A 70L pack holds enough for trips of several nights or for carrying gear for two people on shorter outings. If you pack light and compact, you may have unused space, but compression straps keep the load stable. For overnight trips with minimal gear, a smaller pack may be easier to carry.

Does a 70L pack work as a carry-on?

Most 70L packs exceed carry-on size limits when fully packed. They are designed for backcountry travel, not air travel with strict baggage rules. If you need a pack for flying, look at smaller capacities.

What does frameless mean on a 70L pack?

A frameless pack has no internal frame or stays, so it relies on how you pack and the pack fabric for structure. This saves weight but requires you to pack bulky items against your back for support. Frameless packs suit users who prioritize light weight over load transfer.

Are 70L packs waterproof?

Many 70L packs are described as waterproof or water-resistant and include a rain cover. The pack body may resist light rain, but seams and zippers can still let water in during heavy or prolonged rain. A rain cover adds protection for the main compartment.
